Abstract

Here we describe a new gekkonid lizard, Gehyra woondagoom sp. nov., from the Yampi Peninsula and surrounding islands of the Kimberley region, Western Australia. Genomic data indicate that Gehyra woondagoom sp. nov. is a deeply divergent species sister to the clade containing Gehyra multiporosa and Gehyra occidentalis. The new species can be distinguished from G. multiporosa by a lower average pore count (21–34 versus 45–49) and larger maximum snout-vent length (62 mm versus 50 mm), and from the morphologically similar G. occidentalis by 19 nucleotide sites in the ND2 mitochondrial gene. The new species is likely more widespread than currently known given large sampling gaps on the Yampi Peninsula. This is the 13th recognised Gehyra species endemic to the Kimberley region of north-western Australia.

Key words: Gehyra occidentalis; Gehyra multiporosa; Kimberley; genealogical divergence index; single nucleotide polymorphism.
