My research focuses on the Systematics and Evolution of lichenised fungi. Since 2002, I mostly worked on the systematics of the lichen family Verrucariaceae, using molecular phylogenetics to test generic delimitation and better understand trait evolution within this morphologically and ecologically diverse group of fungi. I also used molecular phylogenetics to look at the evolution of other ascomycete fungi, including rock-inhabiting fungi and black yeast fungi, as well as the algal partners of species of Verrucariaceae. My current interests include high-throughput herbarium genomics, biological soil crusts and the molecular systematics of Australian lichens.
