Three new species of arid-zone pea plants

Botanist Ryonen Butcher at the Western Australian Herbarium has named two new species in the widespread northern and central Australian pea genus Tephrosia, in a paper in the journal Nuytsia.

Tephrosia is a common and important genus with around 140 species in Australia, nearly half of which have not yet been named! This paper is a small step towards a complete taxonomic revision of the genus in Australia.

Both species have been known for many years, but without formal names; they were first recognised as new species by the late botanist Les Pedley at the Queensland Herbarium.

Tephrosia densa, one of the two newly named species, is widespread in the Pilbara region of Western Australia
