In a paper published last week in the Western Australian Herbarium's science journal Nuytsia by Jerome Bull, Steven Dillon and Darren Brearley, a new species of wattle, Acacia corusca, is described. This is a rare and restricted species, known only from a small area near Newman in the Pilbara.
Its name is derived from the Latin corusco (to flash, glitter or shimmer), in reference to the shimmering effect of the dark green foliage on windy days. This character was valuable in locating populations of Acacia corusca from a distance, especially in its typical habitat of exposed hill slopes.
